so let me ask you what's going on in washington with ought growing talks. let me play what president obama said about that. >> markets could go haywire, interest rates would spike for anybody who borrows money. every homeowner with a mortgage, every student with a college loan, every small business owner who wants to grow and hire. >> if we default, what would be the impact on your industry and the u.s. economy as a whole. >> well, i think it would be clearly a very significant impact. the important thing i think about this discussion is when we're looking at it in a more holistic fashion, what are we going to do to reduce the budget deficits and also deal with the trade deficits, but even more importantly, what do we do to create an environment where businesses can grow and we can expand economic development? because this is still a very, very fragile expansion, though it is a expansion from probably the deepest recession we've ever been in wince the depression. a lot of pent-up demand, so i think this debate is centered on the right thing, what do we do t

i wonder if you can talk about biden's role in the administration. what it says that he was tapped for the role about his status in administration. this was a moment when we say wow, this has been one of the more consequential vice presidents? >> biden has been influential in a way that was not appreciated. chuck hagel seems to be on his way to being secretary of defense. they are very close and i don't know that obama had a deep relationship with him, but there other ways in which his fingerprints are on the president's policies and afghanistan won the argument. two things here i would add on guns specifically. biden in a way is -- a messenger for obama and sectors that may not trust him. he's got working class roots from industrial pennsylvania. he's catholic. i guess that the white house sees him as a messenger to people who might be skeptical and have ideas of what obama's agenda is and that biden could be a better messenger on this. i hate to bring up the 2016 number, but i think you may see more opportunities for biden to step out and prove him

i just want to put up what our first read has put out today, talking about president obama's announcement, saying bottom line, obama is going to go as big as he can go, realizing there's little political downside, at least in the short term. chris, your reaction to that? is there really no downside to going straight for this as strongly as he can, fresh out of the gate and off the heels of the gun task force of the vice president's suggestions? >> well, obviously it's going to depend on what the president proposes but i think you've seen from the polls and i think you've seen the reaction from the country that something needs to be done. this is not something that's going to be solved with one simple measure. i think the president and his team have decided that a more comprehensive, bold approach is the smart thing to do. part that's disappointing to me is in this entire debate that kind of erupted obviously after the newtown shootings, is you've not heard anything from the republicans in terms of what they would be willing to even consider. would they consider magazines, would they consi
